They do it all by themselves.

no, they can have puppies quite naturally at home and be very healthy. just keep your dog comfortable while she is giving birth, and try to leave her be whilst still keeping an eye on her. If you think there might be something going wrong you can call a vet and get them to help you over the phone.
Also, a check up some time during the pregnancy would be a good idea.

you do not need a vet for your dog to have puppies but while giving birth the dog will go into a trance-like state, you can even feel free to watch the birth but be careful not to disturb her with any noise or sudden movement she may get scared and even react out of character. if you are still feeling a bit uneasy about it and if it is her first litter be sure to have the number for a 24 hour emergency vet on hand occasionally a dogs first birth can have complications but they are not usually serious be prepared for a little heartache because sometimes puppies can be still-born (dead at birth) and also try not to approach the puppies when she is ready for you to be near them she will approach you and get your attention and then walk over to the puppies to show you. i hope everything works out well!

Yeah, my parents were reputable breeders.. the dogs always had puppies at home. There's a chance that one or more of the puppies might not make it, but being at the vet's will not change that.

Most people have their dog give birth in their own house. But if you are uncomfortable about what to do, you could kall the vet for more information.

my dog had puppies while we were on vacation! we didnt even know she was pregnant! luckily the people taking care of our dogs found them and put them in a small pool for children (w/out the water) lol just put some blankets in there and your dog can take care of them all on her own. she can feed them and she eats their poop too so no messes! you can try selling the puppies, and if they dont sell, the dumb friends league is a good place to take them for free. They are really good at finding great homes for your puppies. Good luck!

dogs will do it all by themselves, the only reason you would need help is if something was very wrong, or stuck. Just provide the mommy with a warm place and plenty of room and water/food. And watch her just incase she has a little runt, sometimes the mother will try to squish (kill) the runt puppy.

If it is a small dog, they have to have c-sections more often than large breeds. Also do you know what the dog is bred to? If she is small and bred to a larger dog, she will most likely have to have a c-section. Most dogs will have babies on their own, but you need to be prepared for anything.

I would let her birth at home, just be sure to have a vets number on hand just in case! Good luck and congrats!

I totally agree with Diane D. I've helped a couple of German Shepherds deliver a few times.
I'd also read up on what to expect. One of the shepherd mothers was very flightly for her first delivery and I had to calm her. She also was wanting to be left alone with her pups for awhile after delivery. Actually growled at me. But she was O.K. later. She got hungry!
