When you say properly, are they breaking up, or no picture but sound? Are they not opening at all? Check file associations. Before doing anything drastic, go to Tools>Options>Performace>Hardware Acceleration and adjust the slider. If you click on Advanced you will find a host of other options.

reinstall the media player .first remove the old one start>control panel>add/remove programs,then go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/mp10/default.aspx,and download the player or why not try the new media player 11 (beta),my wife uses it and she says its brilliant!
