I disagree with the vet. He should be neutered. He is out looking for female companionship, and will keep getting out. Nutering may not even quelch his desire for female lovin, because neutered dogs can also mate with females, just not make babies. He should have been neutered long ago.

The dog is bored and needs more exercise, that is why he is doing this not enough mental stimulation. If you have cable watch the Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic Channel. You should spay this dog, will calm him down some but chewing is a sign mainly of boredom. If you really feel you can't handle him, you should place an add in the local paper, or penny saver saying that you are looking for a good home to someone who could give him the time he needs. It doesn't need to be the country, maybe a family that can take him on long walks daily or a young guy who will take him out to the park, biking, or one that jogs. This dog needs long morning walks so that he is tired and rest during the day.

First thing, find another Vet, the one you have is a QUACK!!!!!
Neuter him. Immediately!!! (the dog not the Vet :)
There are more health benefits to having him neutered than not.
The least of which is that he will stay in the yard. It's mating season, and he can smell the girls (in heat) from about a mile off. His hormones are raging right through that fence.
I can't say it enough, NEUTER HIM!!!
At the vet clinic where I work, we call neutering animals "tutoring" them because they "learn" to behave better. Seriously, this is key to solving this problem.
If he still won't stay in the yard, get an electric fence, they are relatively inexpensive (way cheaper than divorce, anyway) and effective.
Hope this helps.
PS. Just because something is said by a "doctor" doesn't make it true, and it doesn't mean you have to trust them. If your common sense is telling you something isnt right, then get a second opinion, that's why we have "common sense"
I heard this unfunny joke: "What do you call someone who finishes medical school last in his class?" Answer: "Doctor"

I've never heard of neutering shortening a dogs lifespan. I'd say go for it. There are risks if you neuter him after he's 8-9 years old, but before that should be fine. Another thing to consider is he may want to run more, like you said, but try taking him to a dog park where he can run with other dogs. This another situation where it would be good if he were fixed. Swimming is good but I think he is really craving someplace to run free, along with the female companionship.

Your dog has a definate superiority complex and a complete lack of respect for you. Dogs are pack animals. Being with their pack is what they want all the time. However it is the pack leader that is allowed to leave the 'den', (your home), when ever the leader chooses. The leader does this to find food for the pack and set up teritory and fight off intruders in the wild. It is basicly the same idea with our domesticated dogs. Once you establish leadership to your dog, become someone your dog respects your dog will not want to run off so fast. Most dogs do not 'want' to be pack leader, but feel as if they were elected as the leader.

First the idea of neutering the dog is stupid..This dog needs a little more discipline and sounds like your having the same problem I had with my dog..Chewing of the fence means he needs more time spent with him, he is pretty much tryin to tell you he wants more attention then the other dogs in the household, and to do this he is chewing away on your fence trying to get out so someone else will give him attention, next you may like to get yourself a logging chain and chain him up when no one is watching him. That is what we did with my dog, and it helped out drastically...

Get him fixed anyway, because the vet is wrong and it would shorten his life even more if he got hit by a car!
Then get your fence fixed for good like a 6 foot chain link.

A wireless shock type collar may help. I used one for our Lab when he was doing this. They are available through may retail store and on the web. I purchased mine through www.radiofence.com and it has worked really well for us.
