A.D. is short for the Latin words Anno (year) and Domini(lord). It is translated "in the year of our Lord". The year AD1 was supposed to be the year of the birth of Jesus of Nazereth. the person who set up the calendar assumed Jesus as Lord as did many people of his time. B.C. simply means Befors Christ. in other words before he was born. The date is off by four to seven years. So Jesus was actually born in four to seven B.C.

A.D. is after death, B.C. is before Christ. It has to do with the time before and after Christ's life.
