write about a pet or embarrassing moment...something interesting and not so banal...

How long? Two pages? Ten?
How about a woman runs away from her big city job, big shot fiancee and goes to work on a farm. Come up with a reason why she did this, but don't explain it in the writing. Put clues in it so the reader can figure it out for herself/himself.

How about a story about a dog at the humane society who is being adopted...from the dog's point of view. That would be a twist. Or, a day on the city bus as witnessed by the driver. Making dinner for a family during a power outage? Hope these ideas give you a start.

What about writing a story about an interesting photo?
Do an image search on google or Yahoo for something that interests you, shipwrecks, light houses, tigers, etc. Whatever it is.
Look thru some photos, does one look really interesting to you, does it conjour up images and get your imagination working?
When you find one that does do that, get to work writing a story based on the images the picture has brought up to you.
