Running is mostly joyless (although an ardent runner will say otherwise) due to the restricted mileage.
Running truly destroys your knees.
Cycling strengthens your knees. I still don't have any knee problems after spending years on the bike, when I probably should due to other activities like soccer and skiing.
Cycling opens up the roadway for you, 20 miles or more.
Negatives on cycling: much more dangerous (like getting killed by a stupid driver), potential to being stranded with a broken bike, eat lots of bugs...other than that, cycling is the bomb over running.
Another comprable sport is swimming...always look for low-impact workouts to make your body happy!!

They are both great forms of exercise, you burn a little more calories running because you are not sitting down and you use more muscles.
However, the body can adapt to any specific form of exercise and halt your weight loss.
The key is variety, run one day, cycle the next, add jumping rope, speed walking, hill walking, and weight training to your regimine.
The more variety you have the less your body will adapt, and the less burned out you will get, keep it fun and Good luck.

I see this cyclist is my neighborhood every day and he has awesome legs but a large belly ! Running, however, works from your legs to your abs to your arms, surprisingly. Plus, it's safer than cycling because you are in better control.
