They are outdoor cats. I pet and play with them, but afterwards they just sleep and clean themselves.

You can get a laser light - one of those things that shines a red dot like they use for presentations in meetings. They are fairly inexpensive and can be purchased at places like Wal-Mart or Walgreens. Just be sure to never shine it in any eyes, cats or humans. It can cause damage.

The cats think it is a bug - my cat will chase it for as long as I shine it. Then I usually have the "bug" disappear in a hole somewhere. The cats will still hang out and try to get it.

Are they overweight? Cats clean themselves after a meal to mean they are satisfied. Cats tend to sleep a lot of the day. Just because they nap doesn't mean they are lazy. They may have been running and playing a lot that day and just decided to take a nap. Some ideas to make them more active... string. My cats love to play with string. They will follow one around for hours. Also most cats like the fishing pole toy (toy fishing pole with stuffed mouse or feathers on the end). Try giving them a golf ball. They will bat it around and drive you crazy.

My cat is pretty much the same way. He stays outside all day, sleeps, comes inside, eats, and sleeps. I pet him and give him attention and that's about all I know to do with him. I don't think you can force a cat to be more active...just let them be.

For indoor activity, I recommend a laser pointer. Catnip is also worth a try. :)
Otherwise, if your cats are just wanting to sleep and groom themselves after you play with them, it might just be better to let them do just that!

:)

get him/her a toy to chase. I thought that I had the laziest cat until I got her a feather to chase at the end of a stick with a string attached.

i would say either catnip or the laser pointer always gets them pretty active (my cat, lilly always hears the jingle and comes running-she loves it!)
