Hrm. Not to sound mean but it is none of your business. If your co-worker is willing to tell you then it is all good but do not go asking around. It might hurt your co-worker's feelings.

Try to spend some casual time with the person, like lunch or after work drinks. I'm sure it will come out while you're in the getting-to-know phase.
