After living in the USSR/Russian Federation for much of my life, I've moved to Canada and frequently visit the U.S., and I have noticed many people who are mining up their nose! If a Russian did this in Russia, he would be ridiculed to no end. Besides, that's what Kleenex are for, and they are nice quality here in North America; some people here don't use them, and it makes me wonder why since digging for gold up the nose is pretty gross and dangerous (germs, pop vessels, etc.). Just curious about whether this is a cultural difference...

I've spotted few people in Southern California a few times while I was in a car with a friend. We were stopped at an intersection and the car diagonally from us was digging for some diamonds for his g/f or wife and the problem was that drivers don't think that others surrounding him could see what he was doing. Most drivers don't care or there just careless individuals. Whenever I need to pick I use a kleenex tissue and in privately too!! hehe

It may be that some North Americans are more liberal about sticking fingers up their nose. But why do so many ruskies have their head up their a ss?

No,picking your nose in public is open for ridicule here in North
America as well. I don't know why you've seen so much of it,
maybe you're hanging around a lot of people with no class.

It's because the USA is used to getting into other people's/nation's affairs (read: resources, mostly oil) without showing respect for dignity, international law and obstacles like these. So, why won't they pair their noses and fingers up as they please!
