Establishing a good balance between having fun with the class and discipline is one of the biggest problems. Most effective teachers work with both in the classroom.

Having two thoughts in your head simutaneously at once and having to listen to 20 or 30 kids at the same time. But, you start doing a very fine job afterwhile. Don't overwhelm yourself. Do lots of getting to know you exercises the first day. Let the kids help you make the rules the second day. (Rules you want, just let them think it's theirs by making them help you make them. This way they buy into them and you bond better.) Have a happy first year!!

Organizing the classroom- laying down the rules.
The first few days set the tone for the rest of the year.

Have you read Harry Wong's _The First Days of School_? You will find everything you need to know in there.

Probably the biggest problem a teacher would initially face would be to get respect and discipline from their students.

Someone gave me this advice years ago and it made all the difference......Don't try to be their friend (meaning the students) They'll like you in time because they have to put up with you all year. Use the first few weeks to be tough and gain their respect. You can always ease up later....But don't try to be their friend. Be their teacher.

Missing the earliest and best opportunity to establish rapport, respect, high standards and expectations, not to mention getting students excited about what the subject matter and what they are going to be learning over the course of the semester.

Inexperience. Not knowing what to expect. Do you mean what problems a teacher faces for herself or the kids?

Discipline problems. Kids will test you to see if you can control the classroom. It's better to be firm at first and loosen up later than to let them run over you.
