They are a tradition that comes out of Kabbalah, a Jewish mysticism tradition, that says that everything is encode in the Torah--the first five books of the Bible. Some scientists, mostly of Jewish faith, have used computers to indentify what appear to be messages written in what are known as equidistant letter skips (ELS). An ELS is a method of encoded where letter at a particular distance have significance.
According to some, the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin was predicted beforehand by the Codes. However, by and large the Codes can only work as validation and cannot be predictive, because searches must focus on particular terms. It is also believed to be a misuse of the Codes to try to predict the future.
There is no requirement to believe in the existance of the code in order to be a good Jew or a good Christian.

The Bible codes were dealt a serious blow after the author of that book challenged skeptics to find the same thing in the book Moby Dick and they were able to do it.
While there are many marvelous things to search for and find in the Scriptures when a person goes to extremes they can "find" anything they start out to find. God gave us his Word so that we could understand it. It's much more profitable to figure out the "codes" in the book of Revelation by searching the Scriptures to find out the meaning of passages like this one.
Revelation 12:1 And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:
Genesis 37:9 And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.
I'll leave you to figure out why in Genesis there are 11 stars and 12 in the book of Revelation.

I'm a Christian. So maybe I should believe in such things. But as far as I can see it's only a matrix searching program which proves:
If you sit an infinite number of monkeys at an infinite number of computer's with an infinite number of word processing applications, eventually they will write all the world's great works.
