Well, his contemporary ruling religious establishment certainly thought so. If traditional (that is--written by Christians some 60-200 years after the fact) history is taken at face value, then the high priest Caiaphas feared JC's growing congregation in the provinces and his entry into Jerusalem during Passover week was just the last straw. He panicked and turned him over to the Romans for prosecution--mainly on trumped-up charges of sedition, since the Romans couldn't have prosecuted him for blasphemy.

Churches (of all religions) frequently start when a splinter group, or sect, complains that the organizing body has become too worldly, too materialistic, and strayed too far away from their founding principles. They break away from their parent organization, keep MOST of the rules the had before, change a few key ones to differentiate themselves, and slowly become established churches themselves. It's not difficult to see this pattern throughout the history of religion.

The key instigators of sect creation are almost always accused of blasphemy or heresy and are usually cast out of the parent organization; yet, they're heroes (or martyrs) once their sect becomes an established church.

To call JC out as a blasphemer, then, totally depends on who you're asking. Ask the Sanhedrin around 3AD--the answer is yes. Ask Jerry Falwell tomorrow--the answer is no. It's all perspective. Good question, though.

Blasphemy is the defamation of the name of God. These may include using sacred names as stress expletives without intention to pray or speak of sacred matters.

Christian theology may condemn blasphemy, as in the Luke 12:10, where blaspheming the Holy Spirit is spoken of as unforgivable.

However, in the simpler message of the time of Jesus, when Christian ideas relied upon the influence of natural authority against the then secular religious power of the Second Jewish Temple period, (positions exchanged in the centuries that followed), this admonishment may be interpreted as warning against an actual reaction from the Holy Spirit in the form of a curse that can irreparably harm a person (and thus be unforgivable but not by dictate). This statement in effect establishes the importance of this aspect of the Godhead, rather than setting an arbitrary law.

A careful reading of Mark (from the American Standard) shows this: Mark 3:29 "But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin." The more metaphysical aspects of early Christianity being now occluded by the dogma of secular religious authority.

The bible never identifies Jesus as a blasphemer.

The Catholic Encyclopedia has a more extensive article on blasphemy.

No!!! He was not. But He was accused blasphemer.
Matthew 26:62-68

Blasphemy is the act of slandering and cursing, reviling or showing contempt or lack of reverence for God.

Blaspheming God was a serious crime in the Old Testament. Punishment was death (Lev 24:15-16). It was violation of the Third Commandment, which required that the name and reputation of the Lord be upheld ( Ex. 20:7 ).

He was charged with blasphemy by the unbelieving Jews because they thought of Him only as a man while He claimed to be God's Son (Matt 9:3).

Actually, the lawlessness of the Jews themself was causing God's name to be blasphemed among the Gentiles. (Rom 2:24)(Acts 18:6)

Christians are commanded to avoid behavior that blasphemes the Lord"s name and teaching ( 1 Tim:6:1)

it would be impossible for Jesus to be a blasphemer. Jesus is god, the second person of the holy trinity i.e the father, the son and the holy spirit. so as part of the trinity he couldn't possibly blaspheme against what he is.

Blasphemer is someone who speaks evil of, or profane speech, writing or action concerning God.I think Jesus has never blasphemed our God Almighty His creaator.Maybe his followers did.Jesus never said to his followers, pray me please..He spoke pray to God your God Almighty and mine..He did not spoke that He was the son of Allah.Telling that Allah are in the three is one of
a blasphemy..Holy Spirit is only Jibril the angel. He is a messe-
nger of Allah Almighty, who came also several times .to other prophets such as Muhammad.Allah is only one .He has no son,no mother and no father.Jesus is a son of Maria a Holy Virgin who by Allah 's highest souvereignty she became pregnant. without man's touch..She was a very noble and glorious woman.Blasphemy is an unforgiven sin by Allah Almighty..It is included in polytheism which acknowledge another God besides Allah Almighty.

To quote a comedian:

The last guy who said "Hey, why don't we try being nice to each other for a change?" got nailed to a tree.

No, I don't think he's a blasphemer.

If the story is true-that there was a Christ-and he said he came after the old book to begin anew-then he lived on the lies of the first Bible which means yes he is a liar.

Of course he wasnt. The religious leaders would not accept that he was the son of God.Because they feared him and because of Jesus' popularity among the people, they devised a way to have him killed.
