It's not a "horrible disease" - cancer and heartworm are horrible diseases! Just take her to the vet or a groomer and have her glands expressed once a month. It's not that big a deal...

Are you talking about your dogs anal glands? Problems with anal glands can develop from a soft diet. The anal glands usually express themselves when your dog goes to the bathroom. However if your dog is on a mainly soft diet the stool wont be hard enough to express them. Just because your dog scoots isn't a bad thing. Either change the diet to a harder food such as kibble or have them expressed by your vet or groomer. It is also something you can learn to do, but it is quite gross.

What type of meds are they giving you? Is it antibiotics? If so, then she keeps getting an impaction from her anal glands. You need to have them expressed more often, possible once every two weeks instead of the whole month. A more drastic measure is removing the anals glands. It's a big surgery, but your dog will be more comfortable & you won't have to worry about it anymore.

Some dogs need to have their anal glands squeezed very frequently. My dog just got over an anal gland infection and they gave her Baytril which is a antibiotic and also infused them with medication in the sacs themselves. Most dogs express them on their own when they defecate but sometimes they don't. My vet has me adding Metamucil(fiber) to her water to harden up her stools which has improved some. When you notice your dog dragging her rear on the floor or licking her bottom its time to express them. You can do it yourself but it is very stinky. I let the Dr. do it.

I would not call it a disease. Just sounds like you need to take your dog in on a regular basis and have the anal glands expressed

I have a Chihuahua too, and he drags his butt too, I get his glands cleaned and he still drags but not as much, I would take your dog to a different vet and see what they say.

Have a Vet or groomer show you how to express her anal glands so that you can do it yourself once a week or so. It is not hard.
