What is the treatment for panic attacks?
Thanks to research, there are a variety of treatments available, including several effective medications, and specific forms of psychotherapy. Often, a combination of psychotherapy and medications produces good results. Improvement is usually noticed in a fairly short period of time, about 6 to 8 weeks. Thus, appropriate treatment for panic disorder can prevent panic attacks or at least substantially reduce their severity and frequency-bringing significant relief to 70 to 90 percent of people with panic disorder.
In addition, people with panic disorder may need treatment for other emotional problems. Depression has often been associated with panic disorder, as have alcohol and drug abuse. Recent research also suggests that suicide attempts are more frequent in people with panic disorder. Fortunately, these problems associated with panic disorder can be overcome effectively, just like panic disorder itself.
Tragically, many people with panic attacks do not seek or receive treatment

when i first started having panic attacks i was back in college and for some reason had the worst panic attack out of the blue in a business law class. it was coming my turn to present my case and it hit me like a freight train. i barely made it through my presentation----damn, i'm sure the rest of the class thought i was a real nutjob.
over the years the problem grew worse. but at the time i worked in a pharmacy as a pharmacy technician. there had been some startling reports that Inderal (Ayerst's brand of propranolol) was effective in curing state fright at the 40mg dose about an hour before speaking in public.
i tried it and it worked for me. over the years as i spoke more and more to the public as a lector in my Church, i began to notice the panic attacks/stage fright subsiding. now i can speak in front of a crowd without a problem.
there are new drugs that are specifically designed for panic attacks, Paxil is one of them. i'm not a pharmacist, and i don't play one on tv---but i don't think i'd mess with Paxil. there's just too many weird side effects. i'd see if Inderal (propranolol) worked for me--Inderal is by prescription only, so you'd have to explain your problems to your doctor and see what they thought was the best thing for you.
its entirely possible to get over bouts of panic attacks---i'm sure you and your doctor will find the best path for you to take.

i have panic attacks as well, and have them on a daily basis. I take cymbaltia, 120mg/day and Valium. I take a dose of Valium at night before i sleep so i do not have panic attacks at night, but during the day, i wait until one starts before i take any because they make me sleepy, and i have 3 kids to care for. i would see a doctor asap before it develops into something more serious, like agoraphobia, (when your afraid to leave your house in fear of having a panic attack). You can research panic attacks and other mental medical conditions on webmd.com. a lot of people tend to think that something triggers these attacks, but to this day, i have not found anything that triggers mine, other then the fear of the pain of having another one. feel free to contact me if you need more advice and good luck to you.

I have read some litterature about panic attacks. But they allways seem to have a more scientific approach and that is nothing I need in my struggle to survive those horrible panic attacks. This is a "hand on" and very practical book. I felt it was written to me. I am sure that you are going to feel the same.
Joe Barry writes exactly how I think. The examples are perfectly described. And the method is genius. I recommend this book and thanks Joe Barry for writing it. It changes your life

You are accurately describing a panic attack. The fact that you've trained yourself to realize that you are not having a heart attack sounds just like what I did. If I were you, I would talk to my doctor about them. Untreated panic attacks can lead to agoraphobia where you can't even step outside your own house.

Get a new job. It's not panic attacks, you just really hate to be there. If you stay home too long you get guilty and they start all over again. If nothing happens when you are on a hot date, or at your favorite place, it is enviromental.

I take klonopin on a regular basis and Ativan for the attacks themselves.. try to rememeber to breathe deep when you are panicking because a panic attack will cause your breathing to become very shallow causing the tight chest and tingling and stuff. good luck with everything.

I have experienced them, and they are nothing nice, I was on medication, until I said I can not let this take over my life, so what I did was learn to relax in a room all by myself, breath slowly, and keep telling yourself that you are not getting sick. the other things you can do is to get a fish tank and get so fish, watch them swim and you will calm down alot! also, get a sound machine of different sounds of water, the sea, the breeze. let me know how it goes.
