When you are trying to defragment a hard drive there are some things that can basically make it re-start. If you have some programs running in the background then these programs will alter small parts of your hard drive and with this the defrag will start again.
While it is a good idea to try defraging in safe mode (to access click F8 key while you comp is starting up) it is better if you try to shut down as many of these programs as possible before you defrag.
You can do this by looking down in the area by your clock and right clicking "unnecessary" programs and hitting "stopo/exit", but you can also do this with the TASK manager, using Ctrl+Alt+Delete, the latter is more complicated so re-ask or contact me if you wish to know more.

To begin with, NO u do not HAVE to update ur system. Just learn it's limits and work with it. To defrag u must make sure prior to beginning it that there are NO other applications runninng and this includes the screen saver. Go turn that off first. When u r sure that nothing else is running then u can begin the defrag. What normally is happening is that u begin the defrag and the keyboard is left idle for say 15 minutes while the defrag is running. Then it kicks in. This will cause the defrag to abort and it will begin again. Thus u will never get anywhere because neither has time to perform all the necessary tasks. Also in the setup for defrag make sure under options that u have it set to MAKE Changes.

It sounds like your file libary is on the vurge of breaking down. I would save whatever files you need and format your machine. Then reinstall windows. Then just restore your software. This is just one option. Another would be to get a software package that is design to repair file systems. Norton system works is a good one but the new version is only good for Windows XP.

It could be that something is running and changing something on the disk, so the defragger has to start over. Try booting into "Safe Mode" first, and run the defragger from there. That will make sure the absolute minimum of stuff is running in background.

Reboot the PC in Safe Mode.
Run Defrag again.
When it's done, turn your virus checker, screen saver, etc. back on by rebooting the PC (Normal Mode).

Try rebooting into SAFE mode, then running Defrag. It will still take a very long time. GOOD LUCK

It gained't delete something on your workstation, that is going to purely verify the disk. seems that domicile windows already scheduled a chkdsk yet for some reason isn't doing it after rebooting.

Do a right mouse click on that system tray icon called 'tasks' or whatever it's called and do a suspend or turn it off.
Also quit all virus checking software.
