You might try NOD32 from Eset Technologies. Go to their website at:
www.eset.com
You can use the trial version of NOD32 for 30 days, then you have to buy a registration/subscription from them, which is about $30 for one year, and $55 for two years. This ends up not being exactly free, but I am very happy with NOD32 and recommend it highly.
The nice thing about NOD32 is it has the lowest "memory footprint" of any anti-virus software I have tried. That means that it won't eat up your System Resources like Norton and Mcafee do.
NOD32 is fast and reliable and is often updated more than once daily.
As for a firewall, try ZoneAlarms' firewall. It is very tight security, and you'll have to do some tweaking to allow exceptions for your router and computer(s). I found it a little too tight, however. This is a free utility as far as I know.
