If you are in honors classes, but feel slower than your peers, you may have a hidden, non-verbal learning disability, in your short-term, working memory.
This is nothing to feel bad about. We all have differences. Knowing what it is, makes it easier to deal with. You may need to have a diagnostician evaluate you. If you are under the age of 18, your parents must do the requesting.... for both a gifted AND a learning disabilties evaluation. Even if your non-verbal skills fall in the "normal" range, if they are significantly below your other skills (non-verbal IQ 15 points or more below verbal IQ), then you DO have a learning disability, and should be given special supports, especially instruction in memory accomodation and skill building.

That's a good question.
I think what you're doing is the right thing. You just need to work at it. The brain is like a muscle. The more you work at it, the stronger it gets and the easier it is to use. As an example, an aunt of mine use to tutor a kid that was pretty much failing elementary school. Everyone thought he had some kind of disability, but man was the kid stubborn... He kept going over and over the same thing until he got it. Guess what? He finished elementary, passed junior high, graduated high school with honors and went all the way in college. He currently has a PhD in Engineering...

work hard from the start. I was really smart compared to the other kids in my school and I was sent off away from the public school system to a catholic school for high school. I was put into all honours classes and all the best classes I could be. The workload difference was ENORMOUS and I found out quickly that I couldnt put the same amount of effort in that i did in public school.
So what did i figure out? Whenever we started a new unit, I worked hardest at the beginning of it. In classes like my bio class, which were impossible and every test had to be curved so we didnt all fail, I read ahead in the book, took alot of notes, that sort of thing.
But really, what it comes down to is that there are three learners, visual, audio, and kinetic. visual learners learn from seeing things or reading them, audio learners learn from hearing them, and kinetic learners learn from doing them. People who are all three are usually the smartest people, since they learn best. But, if you are only one or two, focus all your studying around that one or two. try new things, find something that works, and keep doing it.
But remember, you were put into an honors class for a reason. It may have been because you were clever like me (we had to take a placement test to see if we would skip algebra freshman year. I didnt know what half the questions on that placement test were even about, but I did know that 3/4 of hte questions were multiple choice, which i used to my advantage and checked all the answers to find the right one.) but you ARE in the class. you may be slow, but you still get it.

Don't think of others being faster than you. As long as you learn, gain knowledge and later on apply that knowledge...your slowness doesn't make you less smart.

Pay attention, be observant and when you pay attention make sure that you are always listening so that you don't ask dumb questions or questions that were probably already answered while you weren't paying attention.
