What are the major issues you face etc? Are there certain cultural barriers/plusses to the job? Is gender an issue? Not looking to become one (I'm a psych) - just curious.

In an urban area like Toronto, we're constantly facing the threat of another terror attack. I think that's the first and foremost. Secondly, it's just every day things, like whether or not there'll be a gang shooting/fight; whether or not someone's got a weapon that they can hurt you with, things like that. Being chinese, it is definitely a plus....employment-wise. Law enforcement has such a high demand now for minorities. As for gender, I'm a dude, so I can't say for sure that that's not an issue, but from other female colleagues that I"ve worked with, they don't seem to have a problem with it. I hope that helps.

People in the USA are allways out to get the police. They expect the Police to be able to jump through hoops. There is only so much the police can do, but people expect them to be able to go out and solve the mysteries of the world. A lot of times it can't happen and the average citzen has the same oppurtunity to solve the crime as the police, but the police get critisized for not doing anything. ( when half the time there is no suspect or other big chunk of the problem missing ).
People expect the police to work and do there job, but will not subject themselves to the same investigations that they have to do to both the inicent and guilty people in order to find criminal activity....such as drugs and other illegal activity.
Then there are the occasional the bad officers( or the ones that get blown out of porportion by the media ), but those are going to be the only ones you here about. Nobody will say anything in the forum about the good ones.
It is a thankless job.

The only problem is people know your a cop when your out of uniform. This could lead to bad things happening. You could get attacked because some thinks "Wait 'till I catch him out of uniform." As an officer you are held to a higher standard. You can't go out drinking and partying and then arrest people the next day for the same thing.
As to the comment about God. I offer ROMANS 13.
XIII - basically states that God is the ultimate authority, he put us as officers in power and those that resist us, resist God.
