Look at the cord that plugs into the wall that goes into your computer. should be black. Right next to where it plugs in you should see a metal grill probably silver and look inside of it. if the noise is coming from there then get a can of compressed air (radioshack) and blow the snot out of it with the can held upright. If the noise is not coming from there then take the side cover off of your computer. you can usually find a couple of screws on the back end of the computer. (Where everything plugs in) look for the source of the noise now if you see a fan running slowly or can identify where the noise is coming from then use the compressed air to clean the fan. That should fix your problem if not follow the advice of the guy who thinks the hard drive is failing/going bad.

If it's a metal-on-metal sort of grinding sound (and *especially* if it's an older computer) then your hard drive may be beginning to fail. Go download a hard drive status monitor...

...and see if it reports trouble with your drive. If it does, then you should immediately back up all your important files and documents to CD, DVD, or an external hard drive.

If your drives aren't the cause of the noise, then it could be a bad CPU fan, a bad power supply or cooling fan, or just the noise from the heads on your hard drive ticking back and forth. You may need to come back and ask another question here with some more detailed information.

Typically there are three components in a PC that move...CD/DVD drive, hard disk and fan. It is pretty easy to get into a PC and I have used canned air (available at Office Depot, CompUSA, etc.) to blow dust out of fans. If you take this on I suggest blowing dust from inside to outside, though you can blow it out from outside without opening the case. If you open the case you should unplug it to avoid safety hazards.

Otherwise you may want to take it to a computer store and have them check the hard drive.

well if your hard disc is making a noise it is off balanced, the best reccomendation i can give from experience is SAVE EVERYTHING YOU WANT TO KEEP BEFORE IT STOPS. it could just finally get compleately thrown off and then it wont write or read. if its in the case then take it apart, get some canned air and clean it ALL

the only thing that "moves" inside your computer is the fan. Open up the case and see if it rattles around when you start your computer.
Other then that, nothing else should be moving.

Remove the lid and see if there is somthing inside it. I've worked on some that had dead roaches in them.
