Pimm's is a major and well known/well used brand of 25% alcoholic beverage now owned by a company called Diageo. Its most popular current product is Pimm's No1, a Gin based beverage that (whilst smelling like Tonic Water) can be served both over ice or mixed in with cocktails.
The recipe of Pimm's No1 is secret (of course); it has a dark tea colour with a reddish tint (Tea + Wine?), and tastes subtly of spice and citrus (yuk!) fruit. A similar version of home-made Pimm's No1 can be prepared by mixing one measure of gin with one measure of red vermouth and half a measure of triple sec, although this will lack the spices that give Pimm's its (disgusting) distinctive flavour.
There are only five other Pimm's products besides No1. The essential differences among them is the base alcohol used to produce them: No1 is based on Gin, No2 on Whisky, No3 on Brandy, No4 on Rum, No5 on Rye and No6 on Vodka.
At present, the only variants aside from No1 still in production are Nos 6 and 3 (recently marketed as "Pimm's Winter"), both of which are strangely enough made in much smaller quantities than No1.
Pimm's was actually created in the 1840s, by one James Pimm. James was a farmer's son from Kent who then became the owner of an oyster bar in the City of London. James Pimm offered this tonic (a Gin-based drink containing quinine and a secret mixture of herbs) as an aid to digestion, serving it in a small tankard known as a 'No. 1 Cup', hence its subsequent name.
Pimm's was commercially marketed in 1859. After the Second World War, Pimm's extended their range, utilising a number of other spirits as bases for new 'cups'. In 2004, Pimm's introduced Pimm's Winter Cup, which consists of Pimm's No3 (Brandy) with added spices and orange peel (just like Cointreau).
Pimm's is especially popular in Britain during the summer season, where it has an important place in popular drinking culture, sometimes with posh people or at picnics. As I have already mentioned, it is normally regarded as a summer drink, ideal for picnics, garden parties, or for spending an afternoon in the pub. It is also popular for serving at summer sporting events, such as rowing regattas, tennis tournaments or cricket matches.

Wimbledon and Ascot, the Pimms event of the year.
I am honest enough to admit that without looking it up, I don't actually know what the liquor "Pimms" actually is.
What I can tell you is that the taste embodies the feeling of summer for me. Whilst in the Royal Enclosure this year, I was utterly dismayed when the Pimms Bars ran out of mint, mint leaves being one of the key ingredients in the base of the jug into which the pimms no.1 and lemonade is poured.
Strawberries, Lemon, Lime and Cucumber are also essential to the flavour, but other fruits are often added for extra "kick" so to speak.
Try it! It's georgeous!

lol, glad to see that I'm not the only one who didn't know. I saw all this talk about Pimms around Wimbledon and on my way from the UK I got to sample it in the duty free store... result... now have two bottles in my kitchen (one getting close to empty).
You should try, it's actually quite refreshing, just put some ice in a glass, some pimms and fill up with 7-up or Sprite to taste.
Need a drink now
Cheers

The techie has, once again, provided a perfect answer. However, there's the matter of preparation.
Unusually, Pimms has a certain art to its preparation of the glass in which it is to be served, according to the training I received as a barman some (let's not be too specific) years ago.
A Pimms No 1, typically served with lemonade, begins with a cucumber - the centre to be specific - being cut into a sort of rectangular shape and placed in the centre of the glass. Around this is placed the peeling of an apple. If you were to take a potato peeler and go around the apple in a clockwise motion, the swirl you're left with is the desired effect. That gets wrapped around the cucumber stem in the centre of the glass. Next, come marashino cocktail cherry, then a slice of orange and then another cherry pricked through with a cocktail stick and left on top of the glass, with the orange slice cut so as to appear to go right around the glass from the inside to the outside. The straw is placed the opposing side of the glass to the cocktail stick.
Ice of course, is optional, but general placed in the glass first before preparation begins.
Cocktail umbrellas to be avoided at all cost.

Pimms isn't beer, it's a disgusting gin (or vodka) -based liquor that is combined with bruised mint leaves and diced fruit in a glass.
