The English language is difficult enough, but being spoken in so many countries, each have their own special accents or even dialects. People in Britan with a good ear can tell what county in England a person comes from. But in North America the differences are more often between British English and American English, but even then there are still variations as between Northern vs. Southern, Eastern and Western. And then as a melting pot of people, even within families there are variations. So who's right? Impossible to say, so your choice depending on what you want to present yourself as, or whom you want to please. Using the 'accents' of the person you are with, can mean they feel more understanding from you.
