And DON'T say holding breath, putting sugar on your tongue or getting scared. Don't say swallow water or drink upside down. I mean a REAL way. :)

Two ways have generally worked for me:

1. eat a teaspoon of peanut butter
2. have a friend ask you to concentrate really hard and tell her or him when the hiccup is coming right BEFORE the hiccup comes. (honest! it works!!)

Well, drinking water upside down works for most people. That's why we say it.

Another way is to get as much air into your lungs as possible and then just keep swallowing more air into your lungs until they feel like they are going to pop and hold it as long as possible. That's what I do when the water trick doesn't work or if I can't get to some.

I will tell you just what I know works for me over the years. No matter if it's water of pop, I hold my breath and drink about three swallows and I am usually cured.

I saw on Regis and Kelly one day that if you light a match, blow it out, and stick it in a cup of water and drink it, it stops it. which would make sense because any of the chemicals from the smoke/match would neutralize the CO2 in your stomach yaddayadda.
p.s. it's wise tale not wive's tale :P

Drinking water from the wrong side of the glass really does work. I think a capfull of vinegar works, too.
