Its not that religious people hate the idea of a wonderfully moral book being written and read by millions of kids, its that the main principle of the book (witchcraft) is against God; because in the Bible (Deuteronomy 18:10) God is talking about what he hates; and it says "There should not be found in you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, anyone who employs divination, a practicer of magic, or anyone who looks for omens or a sorcerer". Right there, its telling us witchcraft is something detestable to God, so true Christians wouldnt want to watch an entire series of movies based on what God hates. Also, if theres some good in a movie, it can teach people that everything (magic) is good also. So thats basically why true Christians dont like Harry Potter :)

Christians always need something to whine about. When I was a kid, they attacked the role-playing game, Dungeons and Dragons, calling it Satanic and claiming it inspired kids to do drugs, worship the devil, and commit suicide. Well, D&D is still around and as popular as ever, the people who play it aren't killing themselves or turning to Satan in droves, and the Christians are thus proved WRONG.
So, now they've turned their attention to the Harry Potter novels and movies. Every few years, they find something else to pick on and boycott and make false accusations about, and each time, they look like morons; yet they keep right on doing it because they just can't mind their own damned business! Christians are very fond of dictating what other people should do, think, believe, and read, while their own morals are in the crapper. I can assure you that, when the J.K. Rowling books are no longer the focus of attention, they'll find something else that puts a bug up their nose. I swear, it's a mental illness.

I used to resent the books because I thought they would be really nerdy and mideval-themed, but a few years after the fourth book came out, I started reading the series and I really liked it. I realized that it wasn't dorky at all, it was well written, and it wasn't mideval at all. If you're judging the series by the movies, I suggest you try reading the books. They're WAY better than the movies, and the movies aren't very accurate. They show a likeness between Ron and Hermione WAY too early, they change scenes around, etc.

The problem with Harry Potter is that it demonstraits the use of evil for good purposes. In Christianity magic is strictly evil, so it cannot bring about good. Making magic seem positive is dangerous for young souls.
This was not a problem for the works of CS Lewis or JRR Tolkien because their works are set in a clearly a fantastic world where prohibitions against magic don't exist. Potter however blurs these lines by setting the magic partly in modern Britian.
The website I link in sources explains it better than I can.
PS I'm not sure I have these objections myself.

Some people will hate anything. Nothing, no one, and certainly no fictional character can pass every person's litmus test for "correctness".
In my opinion, Harry Potter is a wonderful fantasy. And that's what we all need now. We need to believe in something magical outside our daily existence, whatever that may be.
If we can forget our troubles and arguments, even for an hour or two, and get lost in a land of wonder, I think that's great.

You missed a few - Dumbledore is middle English for Bumble bee and
Draconian (Draco )laws were a set of very harsh laws that believed in the death penalty for even minor offenses.
Many of the same people who hate Harry Potter think nothing of dressing their children up for Halloween as witches, devils and mass murderers.
Harry Potter books are lessons buried in lessons. I love them. Harry is not a bad thing. He is a good thing.

People will always come up with a reason to hate something. I find it amusing they get so upset over Harry Potter, but will allow their children to watch Disney movies/cartoons. They let their kids dress up like Power Rangers and play Pokemon, but Harry Potter is obviously of the devil... because it USES the word "Witchcraft". None of these other things call it that. It's ok to say "It's Magical".... but don't you dare use that W word. LOL

Personally, I don't get it either. I'm a Christian, but I LOVE the books. They're very cute, & they teach the good ol' "good vs. evil" with good winning. So WHAT if JK Rowling decided to put in some witchcraft into her books? That's what makes them all so interesting. How else are you going to get a child to read a book nowadays in this computerized, technical world if they're not interested? JK's method is ingenious in that respect.

Because they are scared of what they don't understand? Harry Potter has nothing, NOTHING, to do with real witchcraft. Christianity has more in common with witchcraft. Any person looking into magick because of Harry potter is going to be very disappointed and get bored very quickly.

Let's face it, its too commercial.
But I believe that the religous people who hate it are jealous because their book (The Bible) never got the recognition Harry did! And lets face it, the movies that were made from it are not as entertaining!
But that is just one girl's opinion!!
