My dog has a blockage and I was just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience? Is it costly to remove, did it pass on its own. I am so worried... and how do you prevent it from happening again?

Like I said I have taken him to the vet, infact he is there right now, they told me he had a blockage but were not sure what is is, they were going to give it until tomorrow to see if it would pass, then if not were going to remove, I guess I am just looking to see if anyone else has had this happen, was it costly to remove, etc.

Very common, especially in Labs, Rotties and Pit Bulls who see to eat anything! If you're lucky it will pass. If not, he'll need the surgery to survive and it is expensive. Take toys and bones away when they get small enough to swallow. Don't let a dog chew on those rope pull toys - the string they swallow gets all knotted up inside. Be careful with kids' toys and balls - especially super balls. Some types of rubber swell in the intestines. Also, some dogs love to eat people's underwear and pantyhose. Those will clog a dog up for sure - teach kids to put them in a secure hamper.
Buy big dog toys and bones like the rubber Kong and nylabone.

I hope everything turns out ok.
The only blockage I have ever dealt with and it really wasn't a blockage Just the dog body wasn't passing the food it ate. When we did an xray it looked like a blockage. that vet bill was a lot. the dog stayed there for over a week and they had to do i guess you'll say exploritory surgery. it wasn't anything the dog ate it just happened.
Normally in most cases it is something the dog ate. good luck

Seeing you asked this question on a weekend she has to find an emergency vet hospital, you cannot wait until Monday. The dog will probably die in a short time. Most hospitals will take a credit card or work out a payment plan. If she loves her pud why does she care what it is going to cost? A few years ago my Pitt Bull pup got into the garbage and got very sick. I took here to emergency and they said she had her intestine blocked and had to have surgery to save her life. Turns out she swallowed a corn cob. At the time I had been laid off and was not working. There was no question about her having the surgery even though it was going to cost me a bunch of money. Yes, It cost me $3000.00 for her to have the surgery. She was about 8 months old when it happened. She is 5 years old now and the most playful and loving of my 3 dogs. If she cannot truly cannot afford to have the surgery she should have the dog put down to stop the suffering as the dog will be throwing up constantly.

Never give your dog raw hide chews pig ears or cow hooves as all of these things can cause blockages as you have found out. Only give Nyla Bone durable for the dog to chew on the small pieces that come off can easily pass through the dog. Throw the bones away when frad on the ends

My dog she has a blader infection right now and a little blockage and her pee is red, the vet said that if your dog is going every 2 minutes and thier pee is red than that's bad. But my advice is to take it to the vet. I had the same expariance with my cat he got a really bad blockage and almost died and the sad thing is that in order for him to live they had to take out all of his male parts and that was like 4 years ago and he is still with me i love him so much! he's my baby boy!. Hope i can help!.

Yes, its expensive, it is surgery. No, it probably won't pass on its own.
How do you know there is a blockage?
To prevent it, just don't let him eat things he shouldn't. There have been many dogs with blockages due to greenies (which are not digestable) and rawhides(if they swallow a chunk).
