Are you sure it's horror, or complete and utter disbelief that you could actually mean what you say?
There is no such thing as a true "atheist". If the purported "atheists" truly didn't believe in God or truly didn't care whether or not others believed in God, then the people touting their Atheism wouldn't try to take power away from God. They wouldn't be stamping their feet, beating their breasts, and crying to the legislature to save their children from the "God people."
How can you try and disarm a God and God's followers if you don't believe He or the power exists?
Sorry, it's just kind of an oxymoron. Atheists probably believe in God stronger than some Christians! -quote
Do not critisize what you do not understand. I do not believe in any god that religeons do. And do not care how many people do believe in religeon or if you stop.
-And I try not to tell people I am an atheist because it just puts me in a akward position unless I know the person I am telling has an open mind and can respect my desition.

Well most everyone knows there is no such thing as an atheist. God has put it in every mans heart a void and man knows full well that something is missing. Only God can fill it but man will try any other way but seeking God. Man doesn't want to believe in God because man would then have to confess He is a sinner.
It's easier to claim man is an atheist but he knows in his heart is just a liar and trying to convince others he's not. If he believes anything he would believe there is a Heaven but knows there ain't no hell...yeah right.

People feel that religion is one of the main things in their life. Just think if you heard someone say that they didn't eat solid food. It would make you feel that they were missing out on a major thing in life, and you couldn't really comprehend how that was possible (it is by the way, my grandfather-in-law did that for about 10 years!). I don't believe in a higher power and my father is extremely religious. He gave up trying to make me believe years ago, but still obviously thinks that my life is missing something because of my belief (or lack thereof).

Because religious people seem to not be able to practice their jargon most of the time. If they could there would be no wars, or funny looks when you stated your religious preference. I have talked alot about this with people and have come to the conclusion that atheists practice more of the ten commandments and life laws of the bible than religious people. haha isn't that backwards?? true though.

Because, people with religious beliefs are retards. If u believe in something fine, but that does not mean the whole f*****g world has to believe in something. But since their mind has been filled with so much, all freedom of others is forgotten and no longer respected. that's why they stare. Because they no longer think that others have a right to not believe.

Just think of what these people have vested in this ideology. For some of them it's almost their whole being, or reason for being. For them you represent something that shouldn't even be imagined.
There is something sad in all that. It's probably better to limit scaring them. There's not much to be gained by it anyway - take it from another skeptic..

Atheists represent a very small percentage of society. I would imagine that most people are more surprised than horrified by your revelation. Of course, if the people/family you hang out with are very religious, I can see why they would be very surprised.
We are all accustomed to the our set of beliefs, and when we find someone who is radically different, we are surprised.

Because just for a second, it forces them to think of the idea of there not being a "god", and all its implications. They briefly contemplate their insignificance, their mortality, and the idea that they are basically alone in the universe. This terrifies them. They are used to living in a comfortable fantasy world of self-delusion, and forcing them to face reality, even for a second, shocks the beejeeeezus out of them.
