I believe that's a fable ... there's no way in my logic that we ALL came from two people on earth.

Here's a little trivia for you: In Hebrew legend, Adam had an earlier wife named Lilith, who argued with Adam, disappeared, and was replaced by Eve...

It's down to opinion. You could argue many ways-

If you believe the story to be literal, you could say He did it so that man and woman would be physically as well as spiritually be connected, and resultingly, sex would be a metaphor for the 'rejoining' of the flesh- making one of two, as it was before.

If you believe in the bible, but believe the story to be a metaphor, then you might say that the image of God creating Eve out of Adam's rib could be a symbol of how women were viewed back in the days when the bible was written- they were lesser, and inferior to men. It could also signify the relation to sex in a biblical manner, although in this instance both the story and the relating connection to sex are metaphorical. You could also say it simply means that woman was made after man, and the idea of woman was concieved from the man that already existed.

Then, if you don't believe in the bible you could say it's all hogwash, and that it's a culttural thing (once again men being placed over women), you could say it is a story told in a simplified manner, so that children can be told the story without too many questions.

Heck, God had it wrong - woman probably created the man.

In animal world, a female is more essential to the species than the male. Those that produce assexually, dont need different species. And in one, everyone is a female. When a male is needed, some females develop male organs to impregnate others.
