That is a sort of "which came first, the chicken or the egg?" style question. Jesus was traditionally portrayed as a white man in Europe because Christianity was already boomingly popular there, and they didn't know there was any other way people could look. So basically, the answer is yes, because Jesus became popular in Europe without being portrayed at all, and then the white-looking portraits followed after.

First of all Jesus was Jewish and dark in color, not portrayed like he really was. He was not some blonde guy with long flowing hair and blue eyes. The style of the day was shorter hair for men and it was probably kind of kinky and coarse. But it wasn't the messenger so much as it was the message he was bringing. He still would have been very popular with whites and everyone else as well.

I think you have it a little backwards. Jesus is portrayed as a white guy because Christianity is popular with white people....not the other way around.

I don't think it has anything to do with Jesus' ethnicity. Bear in mind, Jesus is God. God has no nationality, He is God of the entire universe.
