I think that for the most part, parents should be able to raise their kids as they choose. Remember that what is considered right is often a point of view, not an automatic fact.
100 years ago a parent that didn't spank a disobedient child was being negligent. These days spanking is strongly discouraged and in some cases can land you in jail (and yes, it is possible to raise an obedient child without spanking).
Yet 100 years ago we didn't have more abusers did we? So maybe the approach has changed but the end result has not.
It also used to be common for parents to pull their kids out of school early to help with the farm or family business. Those kids learned a trade instead of earning a degree. It still worked.
In other words, while you or I may disagree with an approach, it doesn't make it wrong, so unless there is gross abuse or a neglectful situation, we should probably leave parents well enough alone.
And yeah..I don't agree with what a lot of parents do, but do feel it is their right.

Michele, I am going to sound very biased to you, because I work for the Children's Division in MO. I always said that parents should be able to raise THEIR kids as they saw fit, until I went to work for the division and saw the abuse and neglect that I saw.
I believe in spanking. I believe in punishment for bad behavior. I do not believe in beating children who are little with belts and other items (boards, paddles, whips, cords, etc.) Many people don't understand the enormous incidence of abuse in this country, and some refuse to believe that their abusive action is even wrong. So for what it is worth, we are each others keepers and need to take a part in our children to break the cycle of abuse. There is an old saying "It takes a village to raise a child." Well we are all in that village..... it's not a right, it's an obligation. Thanks for asking. Nana

I think that every parent should raise their children as they see fit. Society should only have a say when the child is being abused in some way. Then it gets hard to define abuse. But I think when something is at an extreme at either end of a spectrum it can be defined as abuse.

There are even some criminals who love their children - I don't think children should be taken away unless they are really being abused or neglected - but have seen some that have been taken from parents who adore them, and would never harm them.

I believe that the government should only allow parents to teach values and core beliefs to their kids. The rest should be left to the government.
Anyway... I think that there should be a good, legitimate balance of the two.
In a perfect world, there would be a greater government presence in childrearing, but unfortunately, our politicians are inaqequate morons that alow right-wing nutjobs to infect their kids with a$$-backwards values that they "claim" to be "Christian."

Yes, they have every right.
The question is who is to say what is right and what is wrong? what is harmful?
There is so many gray areas and so little black and white areas.
