Depends on the airline you fly. The US based airline I work for has a program that will offer first class upgrades if they are available for a price. Domestically its about 50.00 for the first 500 miles. To upgrade on a transatlantic flight its 500.00 in addition to the price of your ticket. They are only available at the airport gate for the transatlantic flights and only if there are empty seats. Not at all a bad price when you consider how expensive those seats normally go for.

On an International flight, your only option for an upgrade without paying is to have a LOT of frequent flier miles and to book very, very early. First class is always full on the long-hauls and a lot of frequent fliers save their miles for these trips. But unless you fly a LOT, you probably won't make it as there's always a long list of people with more miles than you waiting to be upgraded first. I fly about 50,000 miles a year and get upgraded on all of my domestic flights, but never on the International ones.

Be sure that the pilot is your boyfriend. Then it will be easy to switch to the 1st class.

Don't forget... you also have business class on international flights and it is better price than first with similar amenities.

you can't. why does your generation appear to always want something for nothing? You expect free handouts at every turn. There's no free rides.
