Have you ever done anything to make him scared of you?
Give him a treat or a new toy, something he will really like and be really nice to him. Young children are very impressionable.

I have a brother that scares the heck out of all children until they are about three years old. The reason? He's six foot three inches tall, well over two hundred pounds and has a deep loud voice. He must look and sound like a giant to a little child even though he is the gentlest man going.
Try getting down to your nephew's level and speak quietly to him. Don't reach out to him or try tickling or anything that requires physical contact until he is comfortabe just being near you. Show an interest in him but don't overplay it.
He will come around, just give him time and be patient and you will soon be on his list of favorite people.

Try to spend more time around his house when his parents are home, so he can get comfortable with you and see you interacting happily with his parents.Don't walk right up to him and pick him up or anything like that. Try sitting on the floor in the same room with him but not right near him, and start playing with his toys or reading one of his books out loud, while talking to him in a friendly and gentle voice. Let him come to you when he's ready. If you do that every time you see him, you'll grow on him!
My little nephew seemed to hate me when he was 1 year old (He's technically my step-nephew so he met me for the first time when he was 1) but after a few months he was my best bud.

Stop beating him LOL. Seriously let me guess he is in the earlier age of one,,just past 12 months. Boys go through this fear of people about this age. Try ignoring him. If he comes up to you of course say hi, but other than this pay no attention for a little while he will get over it. If however it is something you do,tone it down. Are you a loud speaker, this can be scary to kids as they think loud is angry. Keep your voice at a low level. He will come to you eventually it is probably just a stage. If you want to hurry things along go to his house (pay him no attention) get down and start playing with his toys, look like you are having a fantastic time. I f he comes close enough put a toy in front of him, don't look at him, and just keep playing, if he starts to join in let him play but give it 5 minutes and then start talking...IE pass him a toy and here, things like that. So nice and slow and keeping it quiet.
GOOD LUCK

Same thing happened to my dad and my cousin. To this day we think it was because of his mustache. Anyway, try to distract the baby and bring the uncle closer until he is standing near by. A little bit at a time is important. If the kid is uncomfortable still, interaction with the parents is a must. If a little kid sees that mom and dad like someone, they too may grow to trust them. Don't worry though, he will eventually grow out of it, my cousin does not even remember that she was ever scared of my dad. Best of luck

Wait. He'll grow out of it. My niece was a nasty little b*tch when she was a toddler. She would openly reject certain members of our family, including me, and openly fawn over others and some strangers. However, she grew out of that and is now a super sweet, brand-new teenager who tells me in all sincerity how much she loves me whenever I speak to her. Give him room. Don't force the issue. Don't hold it against him because he'll be able to sense it.

Try some stranger danger tapes at the library with him. He is scared of you because you pose a threat to him. Strangers apparently have not yet but they will if you don't prevent it.
