My dad bought it in the 80's but we kept it stored correctly etc. It has the original box, instructions etc.

Although I will never part from it,, I was wondering if it is worth taking on vacation... and what is the value today.

Yea, my grandpa bought one and mine has the capability to have autoexposur or be all manual which is pretty cool because he got it in 1976. This camera is very well worth owning, I prefer it over my new Cannon Rebel.

Film Photography isn't going to go away anywhere soon, but Black and white photography is becoming a lost art. I still find many professional Photographers using the old Film Photography, and having a Digital Camera too, because alot of things you can do with film you can't do with Digital unless you go in and use Photoshop or some other program.
The AE1 is about the same worth as many newer cameras.. Keep ahold of it, and keep it good.

Oh, and happy Shutterbugging

The value of the camera is less than $100 dollars. However, if the camera still functions it's a great one to work with. Get good lenses to go with it and you'd be surprised what it can do.
