Grieving the loss of a pet is a process, just as it is for humans. It's important to allow yourself and your family members to grieve... but then there is time to get on with it. We lost our beloved Sailor last September, and there are times when it still hurts. However, life must go on. Because we have 4 other dogs, we didn't find it necessary to get another dog. However, had we not had 4, we would have probably gotten a puppy or adopted another rescue.
That said, some things you can do to help you process your feelings are to make a scrapbook honoring your pet. You could also make a webpage honoring your pet. There are books about dogs going to heaven and dog angels that will help. And there is a website called the Rainbow Bridge that is helpful too. They have all sorts of resources available to you, including a Pet Loss Grief Support Center, which includes a forum and chat room. If you haven't heard about the Rainbow Bridge poem, here it is:
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I don't think you will ever get over the loss of your pet, I haven't. In time you should get another pet. Some people name all their pets the same name.

How long ago did you lose your pet? I know from experience, getting another pet usually helps, it did with me. And it helped with my best friend. Another animals doesn't always help, because some people resent their new pet. It doesn't potty outside, is rambanous, etc. It always made the days that I cried there was someone there for me, even if it was my new pet. They can't talk, but there a cuddly body.

Sorry, but a loss of a loved one takes about the same length as a baby, 9 months.

one day at a time... we Native Americans believe that when something or someone dies, on that day there will be someone else born with the deceased's best qualities
