The civil war began with the first draft and published version of Declaration of Independence with the words "all men are created equal" and continued with the forming of the constitution and even with inscriptions on the Liberty Bell calling for "Liberty for all the inhabitants" of the land. Slavery was fought from the beginning by men who formed a nation that placed a "secret code" in their documents calling the consciousness of future generations. Lin con was touched by these documents and during his tenure the hostilities began for war against slavery which was scribed in documents nearly 100-years earlier.

The Civil War era was 1861 - 1865. It was a war between the North & the South. The war ended in 1865 when Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation ending slavery. This was a crucial time because the South fought so hard to be able to keep slavery in effect but the North fough just as hard to end slavery. I wonder sometimes if it weren't for Abraham Lincoln then would slavery had ended? I am proud that we had a president that agreed with the North that all men are created equal. It is sad though that he lost his life to something that was right but that is what Presidents are supposed to do right? Hooray for Mr. Lincoln.

According to the English version of Wikipedia: http://fixedreference.org/en/20040424/wikipedia/American_Civil_War
"The American Civil War was fought in the United States from 1861 until 1865 between the northern states, popularly referred to as the USA, the Union, the North, or the Yankees; and the seceding southern states, commonly referred to as the Confederate States of America, the CSA, the Confederacy, the South, the Rebels, or Dixie. Soldiers who fought for the North were referred to as Johnny Yanks and those who fought for the South were called Johnny Rebs."

According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/US_Civil_War
"The American Civil War (1861–1865) was a sectional conflict in the United States between the Federal government ("Union") and 11 southern slave states that declared their secession and formed the Confederate States of America, led by President Jefferson Davis. The "Union", led by President Abraham Lincoln and the Republican party which opposed expansion of slavery, rejected any right of secession. Fighting began April 12, 1861 when Confederate forces attacked a Federal fort at the Battle of Fort Sumter."

The American Civil War officially began in 1861, but you could argue that it began in 1860 with the election of Lincoln.

1861, but why ask that question when it would be much easier to find it online if you didn't know?

To be more specific:
South Carolina secessed on December 20th 1860 followed by a handful of other southern states. But the official start of the war is generally considered to be the firing on Fort Sumpter April 12th 1861.
