Men:Start with the basics-shoes: make sure you wear fashionable sneakers (IE Puma or D-Squared), not big chunky Nike's. Sandals are only worn at the beach but if you must wear them, they need to be leather, and not Birkenstock. Shorts aren't worn except at the beach-at the most, men will wear very fashionable man-Capri pants, but they're tough to pull off-instead I'd recommend wearing linen or cotton pants in the colors of navy, brown, black, or white, with drawstring pants, or perhaps with a zipper. For shirts, you can wear fitted t-shirts, but try not to have them have anything printed on them-think classic basics-gray,brown,blue, black, and white. Also, button up shirts in cotton, silk or linen are nice and a classy way to beat the heat. Think classics-check out Banana Republic here. For brands that are good here that you can wear well in Italy-check out Ralph Lauren, Banana Republic, J.Crew, DKNY, and Calvin Klein, Levis-classic American sportswear. Think small accessories, on leather cords, not gold chains or anything gaudy.
For women, similar rules apply, although sandals can be worn off the beach, as long as they aren't flip flops. Do not wear shorts-it's viewed as very crass. Rather, wear simple, monotoned skirts or dresses-with a little individuality. Dress classically, and you will be respected and you will fit in. I hope this helps.

The fashions change fairly regularly, but I just noticed a few things that were more popular this year when I was there in the past. First, cargo shorts for teens and 20-something men are strikingly popular - also cargo pants. Jean shorts are not worn. Jeans are still popular, but they need to be tight and form fitting. Sandals have also become a lot more popular - a few years ago thy made you stand out immediately as an American, but many italians were wearing them last week. As for other shoes - the style cannot be found readily in the US. Nikes and such are worn regularly but the style is marketedly European. Mens shirts vary, but again the rule is that the clothes be worn tightly - especially t-shirts.

Yes, I agree-shorts and Nikes would make you stand out as an American for sure and in smaller villages, wearing shorts is actually perceived as being somewhat offensive AND you wouldn't be allowed into some places-especially the Vatican. If you wear other casual clothes like khakis for men and skirts for women with sandals, that would be fine. Unless you go to a fashion city like Milano where designer looks abound. It's a balancing act between being comfortable while traveling and wanting to look nice. Buon Viaggio

I agree with butterfly. First the burqa is not a islamic requirement (if some 'muslims' say it is, then they r idiots). Only hijab (scraf covering head, not face) is required. Secondly, muslims r supposed to respect law of the land. Even the Imam in Italy agrees that the woman need not wear a veil. Thirdly, seems like the woman is made to wear veil by her husband, and not wearing it by her own will. The husband told the media 'I dont want any men to look at my wife'. Clearly it is he who does not want her to go out in public without a veil. Its not her decision. Now the woman will suffer staying indoors as forced by her husband. This kind of man should be thrown out of Italy.

Shorts and Nikes are OK and once you get there buy yourself something "Italian" or "European". If you are a girl, most European women wear dresses or skirts.
