Why does God permit suffering?

Who really is to blame for it?

Humans are to blame for much of the suffering. They fight wars, commit crimes, pollute the environment, often carry on business in a manner motivated by greed rather than concern for their fellowman, and sometimes indulge in habits that they know can be harmful to their health. When they do these things, they hurt others and themselves. Should it be expected that humans would be immune to the consequences of what they do? Is it reasonable to blame God for these things that humans themselves do?

Satan and his demons also share responsibility. The Bible discloses that much suffering is because of the influence of wicked spirits. The suffering for which so many people blame God does not come from him at all.

How did suffering get started? Examination of the causes focuses attention on our first human parents, Adam and Eve. Jehovah God created them perfect and put them in paradise surroundings. If they had obeyed God, they would never have got sick or died. They could have enjoyed perfect human life forever. Suffering was not part of Jehovah’s purpose for mankind. But Jehovah clearly told Adam that continued enjoyment of what He had given them depended on obedience.
Obviously, they had to breathe, eat, drink, and sleep in order to continue living. And they had to keep God’s moral requirements in order to enjoy life fully and to be favored with such life forever. But they chose to go their own way, to set their own standards of good and bad, and thus they turned away from God, the Life-Giver.

Sin led to death. It was as sinners that Adam and Eve produced children, and they could not pass on to their children what they no longer had. All were born in sin, with inclinations toward wrongdoing, weaknesses that could lead to illness, a sinful inheritance that would eventually result in death. Because everyone on earth today was born in sin, all of us experience suffering in various ways..

Ecclesiastes 9:11 says that “time and unforeseen occurrence” also have a bearing on what happens to us. We may get hurt, not because the Devil directly causes it or because any human does it, but because by chance we are in a place at the wrong moment.

The actions of humans have nothing to do with natural disasters. The most devastating thing to happen to the Earth so far is believed to have been the impact or impacts that killed off the dinosaurs (or contributed to their disappearance.) This happened before there were any people. Would we assume that the great lizards were sinners? I think not. This is simply an attempt by people to find some sort of reason in a situation that is necessarily chaotic and without reason.

Natural disasters have occurred since long before humans had a notion of what sin was. The disasters are more a punishment for the irrational choice of most of us to prefer to live in flood plains and the like. You could argue that the rate and effect of disease has actually lessened since man "ate from the tree of knowledge." Diseases like polio have been virtually eliminated unless you're Amish and your religion prevents you from taking the vaccine. Even AIDs, as widespread and as publicized as it is, is becoming treatable. That means less of god's followers in the U.S. - that den of sin - are being smote by Him for having pre-marital or gay sex. No his wrath seems to be solely saved for the poor people of Africa. The horrible toll the disease is taking there could be addressed through the charity and compassion of the Christian nations that own the major drug companies in the world. As always, there is more of a concern about profits and personal well-being than a concern for God's more unfortunate. Ask your faith-based president why his religion deems it more important to act out vengeance in the world than to act out of compassion.

As for death - we currently have 6 billion humans on the earth depleting its resources and fouling its environment at a terminal rate. The mortality of humans seems to be the only chance the earth has to keep up.

I guess it might depend on your beliefs, personally I dont think natural disasters and such are due to sins. It is impossible for a human not to sin, if your theory held true then their would have been enougth sin over this many years the earth would have self destructed by now :)

Yes, remember the earth was cursed at the fall of Adam and Eve. That's why there are disasters. Disease also is a result of sin.

Your other question, no man is an island, has a similar lesson in it; our choices can influence others.

Good questions! :)

natural disasters are a result of the laws of nature that the supreme being created and put into motion, they are not suddenly created because of sin. natural disasters have been around since the beginning of time, whether or not people are sinning. someone said it was because we(must be meaning americans) push religion (not god just religion) out of our schools, governemnt, etc that we have natural disasters, then how is it that even the vatican suffers natural disasters?

They are karma from human's collected thoughts, not sins. Remember, sin is in the eye of the beholder the same that beauty is.

The way I've heard it said is, We have so long told God to get out of our schools, our government, our homes and lives. Like the gentleman that He is, He did. How can we now expect Him to step in a save us every time something happens?

If we continue to contribute to the ozone and global deforestation we will have the problems we are having now. I don't think that has to do with god punishing us, just our stupidity and lack of respect for our future children getting in the way.
