Do you agree that we should change the English language so we could spell words as they sound. The article link is below, so you can read if you don't get what I'm saying. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060705/ap_on_re_us/simpl_wurdz
I, myself, disagree because it'd be hard for adults and people who already know how to spell/read to convert to this new way of our language. So, any thoughts, arguments, agreements, or debates about this?

If "simpiler" is your idea of SIMPLER spelling, then NO!!! Is one of the ideas eliminating silent letters? You might be able to make a case for knife, pneumonia, etc., but where does it stop? Do you propose eliminating silent e at the ends of words and the silent vowel of vowel pairs? Would you then create 5 new vowels to indicate long vowel sounds? Or would you just harmonise all the "long vowel" spellings? What about double letters? Like I said, where do you stop? And who or what body of people is going to deliberate on this proposed dumbing down of the english language? And how do propose getting the WHOLE WORLD to accept your new version of the english language?

I saw that article yesterday. As a teacher--no. Largely because I don't think we'll be able to standardize the spelling of that anymore than we can now. I teach phonics and didn't agree with some of the spellings they offered. Children wouldn't come up with any of those either.

No, there is no reason to dumb down our language. Children should simply be taught the proper way to spell things. By the way, that's a good point about adults not knowing the new spelling.

There have been various proponents of "simplified spelling" over the years. I think Benjamin Franklin was one of them.
To me, I don't think it will ever catch on, because when you use the simplified spellings you can come across as ignorant. I wish questioners who use texting abbreviations realized this!

I also disagree because we would be very confused and not be able to spell correctly for a period of time

I disagree with phonetic spelling. Shall we bring back ebonics next?
Thanks to the educational system wanting to keep things "simple", my seventeen year old BIL can barely read. My eight year old son reads better and he (my son) learned with good old fashioned phonics. My BIL learned site words.
