The recipes look identical, once you consider that there is flexibility in the ingredients. I know gumbo has file, but both can and do have okra which performs the same function.

gumbo is a soup with shrimp and okra over rice. jambalya is a spicy rice pilaf with shrimp and sausage.

jambalaya has the rice cooked right in there. Gumbo you eat over rice. I don't put that ole nasty okra in my jambalaya.

gumbo is more on the soup side, whereas jambalaya is more a rice dish witrh, sausage, shrimp ya ya ya
