L. Ron Hubbard wrote bad science fiction novels with some central idea that were pretty interesting. You really have to read them to understand how bad they were. I think Kurt Vonnegut Jr may have been referring to him, when he used the pseudonym Kilgore Trout, though most people think he meant Theodore Sturgeon.
When he dreamed up Dianetics, it cast a whole new light on things, especially how to reinvent yourself in a new light. most of what he claimed was just blatantly a lie, such as his heroism in WW II and his medals. When you say that there is truth in his books, you ought to try a few weeks under Scientologists' tutelage in downtown Clearwater. Or maybe you might want to talk to a few of the people who have already been through the indoctrination.
I can understand your difficulty with the Bible, however, especially dealing with the personage of Christ. Kierkegaard had the same problem: after all Jesus was a walking contradiction and things like that are hard to swallow. One ought to ask whether the teleological suspension of the ethical is even possible, much less, desirable. Read Kierkegaard's Concept of Irony for a good discussion on the issues of truth.

Tom Cruise's rantings aside, I have a little problem accepting a religion founded by a modern day science fiction writer. There are inumerable works of fiction that outline acceptable moral values but I do not see inumerable authors offer these up as a basis for religion.

Because The Bible was written by God through different people. The proof of that is that the 4 Gospels were written by 4 different people, but they don't contradict with each other at all. Where in the world have you seen people agreeing on something that long & particular completely?

actually there are several gospels written, but only four on the canon. as for the "truth" nobody knows the absolute truth. thats why there are so many religions, sects, and cults. truth is what you make it.
