Depends on what kind of photography you want to be. Are we talking commercial...like weddings, graduations, that sort of thing? Or newspapers, photobooths at Wal-mart? It all just depends on what you're going for. You will probably need to go to school for at least 4 years to get the education aspects---camera work, developing your own film, angles, etc.

I was a pro photographer for an upscale portrait studio, and got paid squat. I had gone to school, and had a degree, but most studios won't pay you for that, because they are gonna train you anyway. If I were you, I would go to a good art school.....not a big university. They generally don't have good photography programs. Even check out your community colleges. The ones here in Michigan have excellent programs...better than any university I know. Also, learn the basics first and work your way up to the more difficult processes. I would not recommend going into portrait work, because the pay is not good and at times you can feel your creativity being zapped. Also, it can be seasonal, which makes it hard on the checkbook as well. Commercial photography tends to pay better and your subjects usually sit still and are easier to work with. LOL Check out all of your options, but get a job either in a camera store or studio, just so you can start learning the ropes if this is something you want to do. Good luck!

By going to college and studing it as a major you would be able to be a photographer. But you can also study it at tafe and still get the same knowledge. You can do an apprenteship and a pro photographers studio, where they employ you and teach you how to be a photographer. Photography isnt hard if you have a natural talent to it, but there is much more to it than pointing a camera at something and pressing a button. Once you learn all these things it will be easy. Photography pays extremely well, although you have to be fantastic for people to pay good money for.
Good Luck!

Last year when I took the camera for the first time in my life I never had any experience of photography of any type or using the camera. The few fellows are also not into such activities and finding the right person here where I am from is one of the impossible thing (well before me). Hardly anyone was up to look at the pictures I took.

At that time the only GUIDE I found was.. Internet. I searched out the communities and found great help from their. From handeling that digital camera to taking complicated pictures, each and everything. within few months of practice and reading and experimenting I happen to get noticed.

By the way, proper education is always a MUST. Learning into a group is entirely different and I believe a very fruitful session. But before you go there you can always start your practices before joining to any school, if you have camera. Specially a digital one.

Understand the camera, its functions, its limits..
Train your eyes to look how the camera would look at subject
Learn Digital Darkrooms, the software to work with pictures. ADOBE Photoshop ofcourse. the best of all. Hundreds of tutorials are available on topic
And finally, read articles, tips, tutorials about taking pictures.
Practice and Practice. take same pictures with different settings, with in different light situation.
And of course. show your work.. online and/or to your friends.

And yes at the end. it will pay good. :)

"how long do i need to go to college?" You don't have to go to college. You start taking pictures and start booking work. Often, you can try to be an assistant with an established photographer to get experience and learn what you'll need to know.

But often, one or two community college classes are a great place to start.

You *can* go to a 4 year college and this may get your foot in the door of many places, but you certainly don't *have* to.

What type of photography? If it's fashion, get some friends to pose for fashion shots. Try submitting your work to local modeling and theatre agents and see if you can work with shooting their models & actors.
