The poster discussing the Florida lottery gave you incorrect information.
Here's how to calculate the odds.
In a lotto 6/53 game, you choose 6 numbers.
The first number that is selected, you have a 6 in 53 chance of having that number on your ticket.
If you are lucky enough to hit the first number, then you have a 5 in 52 chance of hitting the second number (you have 5 other numbers on your ticket, there are 52 numbers left in the hopper).
The odds against picking six numbers in a 53 number lotto game are [(6/53) x (5/52) x (4/51) x (3/50) x (2/49) x (1/48)]
This amounts to 1 in 22,957,480
Want to improve your odds? Here's how. There are 53 numbers in the game. There are six numbers per ticket, meaning that if you buy nine tickets, you can have every number on at least one ticket at least once (and one number will be on two tickets). If you do this, no matter what number is picked first, you will have it on at least one ticket. In that case, the odds become:
[(5/52) x (4/51) x (3/50) x (2/49) x (1/48)] = 1 in 2,598,160
plus - since you pick 9 tickets with 6 numbers, and there are 53 numbers in the hopper, one number will be on two tickets, and you have a one in 53 chance that this 'double selected number' will be the first one out of the hopper. That changes the odds to 1 in 2,334,659.
PowerBall is a little different, in that you have to select 5 'white' numbers and then the red number. There are 55 white numbers in the hopper. The odds on selecting all 5 white numbers are:
[(5/55) x (4/54) x (3/53) x (2/52) x (1/51)] = 1 in 3,478,761
And, for that 1 in 3.4 million chance, you have to have the red number selected as well. There are 42 red numbers, and you have a 1 in 42 chance of having this selected.
Therefore, the odds against hitting 5 white numbers + red in powerball are 1 in (3,478,761 x 42), or 1 in 146,107,962.
Again, you can 'reduce' the odds and eliminate one number by buying 11 tickets. If your 11 tickets have each white number on them once, your odds reduce to 1 in 316,251 to get all five white numbers correct, and 1 in 13,282,542 against winning the whole thing.
Have fun playing and good luck.

ok, florida lottery by example:
you have to get six numbers no matter the order and the numbers are from 1-53 i think so if you buy 1 ticket you will have 1 possibility in 53^6 which is 22.164.361.129 so, put that dollar in your savings account and STOP wasting your money

It depends on which lottery you play, first of all. Beyond that, you could lose your dinner money if you play your cards incorrectly; I've known it to happen.
Avoid video lottery terminals at all costs!

You're just as likely to be struck by lightning.
Twice.
While being attacked by a great white shark.
And killer bees.
In the basement of the Alamo.
With Jimmy Hoffa.
