Protocol, in the BDSM world, refers to how Tops/Dominants/Masters and Bottoms/Submissives/Slaves interact with each other. Some groups have very elaborate rules governing protocol, and some do not. Some will also say that the behavior of an owned submissive or slave is dictated strictly by the owner.

I've heard it said that many rules of protocol date back to the Old Guard, or to the Leather folk. Some sub-groups within the BDSM lifestyle will have their own separate protocol.

Usually, basic rules of protocol dictate that the sub/slave refers to all Dominants as Master/Mistress or Sir/Ma'am. A sub/slave should not speak to a Dominant unless spoken to first, and a Dominant should likewise not speak to an owned sub/slave without first asking permission of the owner. Other rules pertain to kneeling, scene etiquette, and so on.

I would encourage you to do a web search for more information.

Full protocol is the state where the formalites of a Dominant/submissive interaction are adhered to. This varies from group to group, but it usually consists of submissives being totally obedient to their Masters, using the formal terms of "Master" (or "Mistress") and Sir/Ma'am in all modes of communication. It also usually extends to all of the other Dominants present, and initiating communication with others requiring permission from the Dominant.

This is usually different from normal everyday lifestyle interaction, which may be more informal and permitting of conversation without explicitness. You most likely would see the informal style as reletively open events, such as a munch or a discussion at a private residence or even a dungeon party. Full protocol is seen in special types of gatherings (such as a formal dinner) and is usually planned for explicitly in advance and made known beforehand.
