can you get a long haired border collie born from a short haired one?

I raise, train and show rough collies, not border collies, but we have short and long hair too and the genes may be the same.

SHort haired collies are smooth collies, long haired collies are called rough collies. The rough gene is recessive and smooth is dominant. Because smooth is dominant, if you have the smooth gene you are a smooth. That is why 2 roughs can't have smooths, because if they had the gene they wouldn't be roughs. 2 smooths that carry the rough gene CAN have rough babies, because they can carry the rough gene and pass it on. But if the smooth only has smooth genes (not carrying a rough gene) it can only produce smooths no matter what it is bred to (even a rough) because it can't pass anything on but smooth genes.

One more thing: it is not true that a smooth-bred rough will have shorter hair than a rough with rough parents. THe genes don't mix, it is just as long. I have a rough that was from 2 smooths.

Yes you can, infact my border collie puppy's parents had different lengths of hair. Dam had short, Sire had long. It really just depends on the pup. Sometimes they come out short haired no matter what. Although chances are that if you breed two long haired you'll get long hair and vice versa.

Yes..Even if both dogs are short haired if they both have the long haired Gene they can throw pups with long hair!
