I need to send wine to some business associates. One bottle each of red and white. I am looking to spend about $75 - $100 per bottle. I don't know anything about wine. Can anyone who knows about wine make a good recommendation? Thanks!

Please don't equate large dollar amounts into wines that people should like. Example of that would be Ch. Doo Dah at $500 / bottle, the critics loved it so you assume that it has to be good. You open it , taste it, and spit it out because you didn't like it. If you don't like it, it doesn't matter what you spent. Also, if you don't know anything about wine, please don't try to impress, it is better to show thoughtfulness. I used to sell wines wholesale, so I'd say that I've seen and tasted more than most people. Some were very celebrated (that I didn't care for) and others were great wines for the money spent. Depending on availability some very agreeable wines from Fetzer fall into the reliable category. They make wonderful wines from California. For a dry style, try their Sundial Chardonnay. For something to go with spicy food, try their Gewurztriminer (also great with turkey), or their Johannesburg Riesling, it's a nice stand alone wine. Both the Riesling and the the Gewurztraminer have a little sweetness, don't be afraid of that. For red wines, Fetzer has reasonably priced offerings in Cabernet and Merlot. Mirassou has a great Pinot Noir at a very good price point that reminds me of the French Burgundy style. Great with lamb or Cornish Hens. Remember it is the thought that counts. All depends on where you are, I can tell you specifically of three places in the greater SF Bay Area. There should be several wine merchants (not a supermarket/grocery store/liquor store). listed in your city. Look in the yellow pages under Wine. These folks will be the best, and generally will not steer you wrong. It will help if you know something about the tastes of the person receiving the wine (white vs red) Also visit a couple aka shop around.

Robert Parker is the quintessential source of wine information. He rates wines on a 0 - 100 point system, and I have found that I agree with his rating. (I remember a zinfandel he rated at 92 which was to that time the best wine I had ever drunk. Best thing was I found 2 cases at $175/case. They were the last of the shipment). He publishes a newsletter called "The Wine Advocate" He can be found at: http://www.erobertparker.com/

My best recommendation would be to go to a really good store for wines in your area. Or, you can "contact us" at a site like http://www.winereviewonline.com/home.cfm.

At the store, or at the site online, ask them some questions. At the store is best, because you'll be able to buy what the expert there recommends. Look for gold and double gold veritas winners.

Or, you can just forgo the red/white thing and get them each a bottle of Moet and Chandon's Dom Perignon champagne. =)
