Attire: People are more relaxed when they wear what they feel comfy in. Have them wear whatever they want for the most natural photos. (I have seen some really cute p.j. shots).

Lighting: If you are taking the photos outdoors- be sure to mind the sunlight. Dusk or Early morning shots are the best lighting- unless it's overcast. Overcast will make shooting the photos easy. No harsh sun to wash anyone out and make them squint.

Poses: Take a bunch of photos! Look at professional photographer websites to see what works. This will inspire you as well (try www.boutwellstudio.com and www.thebecker.com). Don't be afraid to take candid shots as well. Let them do their thing a bit (kiss/hang-out etc) and shoot a couple of frames. Sometimes these turn out the best.

Have fun!

I completely agree concerning looking at professional photographer sites to get some ideas as well as magazines. Take a good look at how they have been posed so that you will have some poses in mind and not just telling them to do what they want.

Have them dress comfortably...agree with matching attire.

If one of them wears glasses, take out the lenses. You want the glasses to be on if they wear them frequently. The lenses with cause flashback and that will destroy the quality of your picture.

Generally for an engagement picture have them as close as possible for the poses.

I only recently heard of this phenomenon, but it's a cute idea! I've seen picture of the couple at the location where they first met, had their first date/kiss, or even got engaged. I've also seen them where the couple dresses in similar clothes (both wearing blue jeans and a white shirt, but not perfectly matching).

Do they have any common interests? If they are both sports fans and root for the same team, how about a picture near the stadium/park/arena or with them decked out in their team's gear?

We took casual photos in our yard in jeans and matching shirts of the engaged couple (my son and his future bride). We took them with a digital camera and had them developed on line. They turned out great and we had fun doing them. We spend a lot of time in our yard and around the pool so it made sense for us to use a familiar background.
