Infectious Mononucleosis was so named for College students it was first diagnosed with, but a bit unfair, as apparently if dishes are not well cleansed the infection can be contacted that way also, as in cafeterias. The underlying virus is very nasty with several unpleasant links, and also prone to cause relapses or recurrences when a person is over-stressed. Luckily I never got it but I know several sufferers, and there is a whole range of symptoms. Extreme fatigue is very common. Because it is a virus our treatments are poorer for it, so more for the symptoms. Important than to make sure things are clean and dishes well washed.

What IS mono?
It's an infection that's caused by EBV (Epstein-Barr Virus). The most common age range of people who get mono is between the ages of 15-17.

How do you GET mono?
Mono isn't very contagious, but you can get it by direct contact with the saliva of someone who has had mono before. This is of course why mono is called the "kissing disease". However, you can also get mono by sharing drinks, food, silverware, or even when someone coughs or sneezes.

What are the symptoms of mono?
Fever, sore throat, headaches, swollen lymph nodes, loss of appetite, headache, aches and pains, weakness, dizziness, jaundice, rash, and swollen tonsils.

Are there any complications?
Yes. There is a great risk of a ruptured spleen. This can happen if you start being active or walking around too much before you should. Also, there have been some cases of anorexia occur, because some people stop eating because their sore throat is too painful.

Any cures, treatments, or medicines?
There aren't any cures for mono. However, there are some things you can do to treat your symptoms. For your headache and any pains take advil or some pain reliever. For a sore throat suck on cough drops or some type of candy. Also, it's very important to keep a well balanced diet and to drink a lot of fluids. The most important thing to do is to REST!!! There aren't any medicines to help you get over mono. Antibiotics will only make it worse, because mono is a virus and antibiotics can just make viruses even worse.

How long until you can get back to your normal routine?
Some people (mainly athletes) can get over mono in about a week or two. Usually it will last for about a month or two, but some serious cases have lasted from six months to a year!!

Care: Be very careful still after the symptoms are gone, because there still is a risk of a ruptured spleen. REST is extremely important.

mononucleosis or mono for short. No, I have never had it. But I know people who have. It is highly contageous. It's nickname is the kissing disease because it is spread by kissing lots of the time. But it is spread through saliva in general, which includes eating and drinking after people.

infectious mononucleosis caused by the ebstein barr virus...i have never had it, but i know about...the sure signs of it is malaise (feeling bad/tired) and big lymph nodes. youre not suppose to do strenuous activities because of the enlarged spleen complication. other than that, you just deal with it until you are better. can incubate for 1-3 months.
