Amen, a combination of both, nothing is more smug or boring than an educated fool. This world is no fairy tale, and you have to be able to get down & play like it is to make it. Best thing is to know when to apply the schooling or the street savvy.
Never forget your roots or be ashamed of them, but get the education!

Hi!

Well....ANYone can have street smarts, but not just anyone has the determination and drive to complete the school smarts.

My advice is...go for the school smarts and the street smarts is automatic. ;)
Oh...another thought here...
Check out some older friends and relatives that are about the same age. Look for some with school smarts and some with just street smarts. Then compare them.

Usually, the first few years after graduating with book smarts, incomes are similar to those who are street smart.
After about 5 - 10 years...the school smart are FAR higher up the financial ladder than those who are NOT graduates.

Just food for thought. I would go for the school smarts first...then you can choose to use it or not. You have no choice but a living wage if you only shoot for street smart. AIM HIGH...you will surprise yourself!

Good Luck!

I think it's important to have both. I'm a Special Ed high school teacher and can tell you that if my students didn't have street smarts they would really struggle in this world. Academics are not their first love and it's a real challenge for them, however, because they've been exposed to the real world they know how to survive. If someone is only focused on school/academics, they miss what's going on around them. However, without the education life is so difficult. Just like everything else, a balance of both is best.

SHOW ME THE MONEY- You do not have to have the best education to make the most money- sales people make allot of money, The bigger the item the more you can make, calling on people and making sales. Teacher do not make allot of money 30-50g's per year. In sales you can make 60-100g per year. Lawyer in there first year make 50-75g, Doctors 100-250g. People in real estate can make 0-1,000.000+ a year depending. Now people in free Enterprise(Business owners) thy can make big dollars with hard work, it endless. You need both but street smarts will take you the farther with education backing it up. Unless you write a book that a best seller, then you don't need street smarts all that much. Now living on the street is different than street smarts. Y-gotaa know people----------for success anyplace. A person that's a collage graduate make $1,000,000 more in there life than some one who does not have a high school education. I think I read that someplace!!!!!???

They are not opposites - just different manifestations of learning in different environments. Having both gives you more choices in life and doesn't keep you 'tied' to one or the other.

Maybe your aunt with the doctorate doesn't have street smarts because she really doesn't need them, but she'd be better off with both smarts.

Honestly school smart is waaaaay better!!! For you to be more educated in life and have an awesome career everyone will prefer a person who is "book smart" and not street. And it's better for your image =)

Depends where you live, if you live in suburbia, school smarts, if you live in the 'ghetto' then street smarts. Personally i think they're both assets.
