I bought my own wedding set at a local pawn shop for $800. It's a Princess cut diamont (1/2 carat) with two 1/4 carat diamonds on the wedding band. It was appraised at $4,500.
Standard practice is a minimum of two to three months salary just for the engagement ring alone.
Good luck!

I think people should get what they like and can afford. It is a symbol for the two of you, not for the world to see just how big a ring you can get. I say do not spend more than one to two months salary on the ring. Why go broke and not be able to pay bills before you even get married?! Start off financially smart!

bigger is not always better i dont care what you make if you want to be sincere get a nice round cut diamond or princess its more practicle for everyday wear next search debeers.com because you better know the the 4c's cut clarity carat color the diamond people on this web site have alot of info. next ask yourself what type of woman is she is she plain jane or high mant. the average price for my ring was priced three grand on sale its worth 5k and the band is specially made at ELSA rings on rt 110 in farmingdale Long Island i have to say they will design anything you come up with and stay away from Helzberg diamonds they have crap. the other thing is you can go shopping together and let her pick her own ring or just window shop to get an idea of what she likes. i will let you know this the wedding planning is a pain in the butt i get married in 58 days and i am looking forward to the trip make sure you get an all inclusive package like sandals resorts they have a hurricane clause in their trip packages good luck but before you ask her the question ask your self do i really know enough about what makes her tick if so the type of ring to get will be easy remember round or princess because really pointy rings snags pantyhose the other thing is make sure you can find a wedding band to match as a set for her ring as well as your what do you want to wear for the duration of your marriage and what will you feel for her every time you look at that rock on her hand SIV2 and higher with a clarity above F or better is really good and solitaire cost more secondly make sure your ring comes GSA certified because uncertified diamonds can not be insured against loss or theft
good luck love

Jewelry stores say 2 months salary. But, even if you only make $100K, $16K may be a little steep. Maybe just look for quality and avoid price issues. A perfect 1 carat tiffany set diamond will always be beautiful and in style. It would start at around $10K set in platinum.

It all depends.. if you want size and dont care for clarity or color then it might be somewhere in the $1000 range if you want something decent it might be a bit over $3000. GO to zales.com and check out some style and prices and that will give you some idea on the prices.

Whatever you feel is appropriate. Price really shouldn't be a factor in picking the ring when you don't really have to worry about it. Find one you really like and think she'll really like and go for it. Mine cost about $200. My then fiance pulled in less then 10,000 annual so that was good. I think it is normally two months salary regardless of income.

my finace' got mine for $300 at a local pawn shop. I had it appraised and insured. It was appraised at $1600. Really, how much he spends on the ring, isn't that big of a deal. In the real world, it's said that a man should spend at least one months salary.
