None did.
This is an urban legend.
"The sardonic joke about problem-plagued M-16s being toys morphed into a legend about their really having been produced by a toy company, with "proof" offered in the additional detail of soldier's spotting M-16 handgrips embossed with the Mattel logo. The redesign that improved the M-16's reliability was then attributed to a switch in manufacturers (to a "real" gun company) prompted by soldier complaints."

Mattel manufactured the M-16 at one point in time (or maybe just the plastic furniture) but the M-16 was in fact designed by one Eugene Stoner while working for the Armalite Corporation not a toy manufacturer.

No toy company designed the M-16. The M-16 assault rifle was designed by Eugene Stoner in the '50s to replace the M-1 and M-14 7.62mm rifles. It isn't being replaced by the M4 because both the M4 and M-16 are basically the same model, the M4 merely has a shorter barrel, making it slightly less accurate. Plans were in the works to replace the M-16/M4 models with the HK XM8 and it's variants. The current contract in in army limbo.

I belive that they are using mainly two (2) types of assault weapons. The M-16 short and long stock & barrel and the MP5, The mini 14 might also be a favorite for some reason they dont use it anymore,During WORLD WAR 11, it was the garrand top feed 7-8 rounds the thompson was also used with 50 round drum or 30rnd Mag Side Arm, not real sure, they keep change it from time to time. Back to assault weapon the 223 round/cartridge is the one that they maily use, Sniper ussually is 308. It also varies depending on the task. Special ops often carry more than the infantary soldier/Ammo (More Mags) for better and more complete info check out military website.

Mattel only made the plastic parts to the M-16. They did not design the rifle. Stoner did.

the man who designed the M16 was a former aeronautics expert. M16 is rarely used and is being phased out in place of the M4 which is more compact and lighter. same ammo, range etc.
