He is waiting for the "right momemt" and he wants to create the perfect scenario for his future wife. There's a lot of expectation of the proposal. This proposal story will be told over and over again for centuries to come. It's worth the wait.
Note: My husband was going to propose in June on our trip to NYC but decided to hold on until Dec that year. He told me that we needed to work some things out before he proposed. I guess we did because we are now married.

First question is do you want him to propose? If so why not ask him. Second, I think you are being paranoid. Just because he bought it 5 months ago doesn't mean he doesn't plan on doing it. My sister and her fiancee had the ring for a while, and even kind of picked it out together, before he called her at work and said that they should go out to dinner together. She cancelled with me and went home. Her boyfriend had it sitting on the bed in a heart made of rose petals and candles burning and music playing. She knew he had the ring and just let things go at their own pace.

You know, this is a big deal. Give him time. He may be having trouble getting the nerve or coming to the point of asking. They say life is short, but on the other hand when you are dealing with major life issues like marriage, you have your whole life ahead of you and it's best to wait until everyone is ready to take that step.

Any special holidays coming up, or anniversaries? Does he have a job, is he financially ready to be the provider for you? If you two are not having any issues in the relationship negatively, then don't blame yourself, there might be another reason!

He's waiting for the right time to ask you. Marraige isn't really something you rush. You may love the person more than you love your own mother, but you need to make sure you yourself is ready for the commitment. Plus, maybe he's making sure that you want to marry him because he doesn't want to ask you and end in heartbreak.

Maybe he is waiting for an special ocassion such as your birthday, Christmas, anniversary or Valentine's day... if he has a ring, it's just a matter of time.
Good luck
