My two cents:

the best seafood restaurant in Manhattan (and arguably the U.S.) is Le Bernardin. The two best meals I have ever had were there. Eric Ripert is an absolute genius (his flight of fluke ceviche is awe inspiring). The only problem is price: $200 per person (including good wine) is not an uncommon occurrence.

The best seafood value in Manhattan (relatively cheap by Le Bernardin standards but not a pittance) is Aquagrill. The husband/wife who own the restaurant know their seafood! I've never been disappointed. Decent wine list, excellent bread (a small but telling detail) and a nice variety. Also known to be one of the best oyster bars in the city.

I have not yet been to Esca but hear raves from those who have been. If you like simplicity where the ingredients rather than the preparations do the talking, you must try (I'm more into preparation, hence my absence to this point).

I have also been to Oceana, though not under the new chef (apparently, he has done well after Rick Moonen's departure). I thought the food was excellent and the atmosphere stuffy. If I want stuffy atmosphere, it's Le Bernardin and everybody else, hence no return visit.

Bon Appetit!

I've heard Oceana is great and same goes for the oyster bar in grand central station.
One if By Land, Two If By Sea I believe is an Italian Seafood place. That's supposed to be great.
Also, Esca, I think it's called. Mario Battali's Italian raw bar place. That was really good.

The Lobster Box (little more upscale) on City Island is very good as well as Tito Puente's (live band), also on City Island. Tito's has the biggest and best coconut shrimp appetizer I've had. The shrimp are so big you have to cut them with a knife and fork. Also the Chocolate Raspberry Martini at Tito Puente's is delish. The City Island standby thats always very good is Sammy's.

The Oyster Bar in Grand Central. The BEST New England clam chowder I've ever had. Amazing seafood. And, great desserts. There is "formal" dining (i.e. regular tables), bar seating (for oysters) or counter seating (for a real quickie during lunch hour).

My fav. seafood restaurant is Oceana on 54th & Sixth. The dishes are really unique (but sometimes intimidating) and the menu is always changing.

If you're looking for the basics (crab, lobster, fried fish), I think the best is City Crab on Park Ave. Huge menu and the preparation is really simple. But it's delicious! And it's casual and perfect for groups.

Fjord Fisheries in Cos Cob, Connecticut has fantastic seafood but you have to take out; some is premade, some is just out of the sea! But FANTASTIC!
